Kane Sweeney Named National Hitter of Week

Baseball's Sweeney Tabbed as National Hitter of the Week

Morehead State junior first baseman Kane Sweeney has been named National Hitter of the Week by the Collegiate Baseball Writers Association for the period of May 12-18.  He is the first Ohio Valley Conference hitter to earn the award since March 12, 2013.

"Congratulations to Kane," Head Coach Mike McGuire said.  "This is an outstanding honor for him and our program.  There are thousands of Division I hitters, including hundreds of professional prospects, and it says a lot to be chosen as the very best for any given week."

Sweeney hit .421 (8-for-19) with eight runs and 12 RBI during the four-game stretch.  He recorded two doubles, one triple, two homers and six walks while not striking out in 25 plate appearances.  The native of Millstadt, Ill., also collected 32 putouts and two assists with no errors.

Sweeney helped Morehead State register 50 runs last week.  The Eagles dropped a heartbreaking 14-13 decision in 12 innings at Southeastern Conference opponent Tennessee on Tuesday, but rebounded in their final conference series to take two of three from Jacksonville State.

Sweeney launched a grand slam en route to five RBI against Tennessee.  He added four RBI in the series opener against Jacksonville State, went 4-for-7 with three runs and two RBI in a 13-inning affair on Friday and hit safely for the ninth time in 10 games in the regular-season finale.

"Kane capped a terrific regular season with some great performances last week," McGuire said.  "His grand slam on Tuesday gave us a lot of confidence against a quality opponent in Tennessee.  He followed that by making big contributions in a crucial series win over Jacksonville State."

Sweeney has 21 multi-hit efforts in 2014 and is one of just two MSU players to start all 54 games.  He owns a .313 batting average, .426 on-base percentage and .525 slugging percentage.  The left-handed hitter has also tallied 17 doubles, nine homers, 39 runs and a team-high 47 RBI.

The annual Ohio Valley Conference Tournament is this week in Jackson, Tenn.  Fifth-seeded Morehead State opens against fourth-seeded SIU Edwardsville on Wednesday at 4 p.m. ET.  All tournament games will be webcast on and broadcast on
